A bold statement from Jon Rahm has sparked controversy in the world of golf. He accuses the DP World Tour of 'extorting players', a bold claim that has many questioning the dynamics between the tour and its competitors.
Rahm, a former world number one and a two-time major champion, has refused to sign a settlement that would allow him to play in both the DP World Tour and LIV Golf events. This decision comes as eight other players have been granted releases by the DP World Tour, enabling them to participate in LIV Golf while retaining their memberships and Ryder Cup eligibility.
But here's where it gets controversial. The waiver these players signed includes an agreement to pay substantial fines, reportedly around £2.5 million, for participating in LIV events without the DP World Tour's permission. Additionally, they must withdraw all pending appeals and commit to playing in specific DP World Tour tournaments.
Rahm, in a recent interview, expressed his disagreement with these conditions. He believes the tour is trying to exploit players like himself and younger golfers who have no involvement in the political aspects of the game.
"It's as if they're trying to have their cake and eat it too," Rahm stated. "They want to capitalize on our presence and impact at their tournaments, yet they fine us for playing elsewhere. It's a tricky situation, and I'm not going to agree to it."
He further proposed a compromise, suggesting that if the number of required DP World Tour events was reduced to four, he would sign the agreement immediately. However, the tour has not accepted this offer, leaving Rahm steadfast in his refusal to play six events as mandated.
"I'm not budging on this. I don't want to play that many events, and it's not what the rules dictate," he added.
When approached for comment, the DP World Tour declined to engage with the BBC.
