The Golden State Warriors have reportedly agreed to a trade with the Atlanta Hawks, sending Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield to the Hawks in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis. This move comes as a surprise to many, as it marks the end of the Warriors' pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, who they had been heavily targeting. Sources indicate that the Warriors made several offers over the past week, but ultimately decided to pivot and focus on other players.
For the Hawks, this trade provides an opportunity to acquire a veteran stretch center on an expiring contract. Porzingis, who has been on the Warriors' radar for some time, has struggled with health issues, including a tricky illness called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which has limited his playing time this season. The Warriors are hoping to get Porzingis back to full health and productivity, as they currently sit at 27-24 and eighth in the Western Conference.
On the other hand, the trade also means the end of Kuminga's five-season tenure with the Warriors. Despite never firmly establishing himself in the starting lineup, Kuminga averaged 12.5 points on 50.3 percent shooting in his 278 career games. The Warriors are also trading backup center Trayce Jackson-Davis to the Toronto Raptors for a 2026 second-round pick from the Los Angeles Lakers.
This trade raises questions about the future of the Warriors' frontcourt, as they plan to keep Draymond Green despite previous trade talks. The addition of Porzingis, if healthy, could provide much-needed rim protection and 3-point shooting.
